Welcome to Korea University’s Jean Monnet Network Project ‘NEAR-A New Dimension in Asia-Europe Relations.’ On behalf of Korea University, our faculty, students and staff, I am honoured to serve as a project leader of an exciting academic adventure on the European Union. This project is committed to explore the EU’s Global Actorness and Strategic Partnership in Asia (China, India, Japan and South Korea). This award has evidently raised Korea University’s research profile on EU/European Studies on the globe.
This network project boasts the quality of research team consisting of five Jean Monnet Chair Holders in Asia-Pacific Region. From 1 September 2016, for three years, five participating partner institutions will collaboratively and actively promote excellence in teaching and research in EU studies through implementing special lectures in each location and releasing research outcomes as diverse formats of publications on the EU’s international presence in Asia.
NEAR project will cover the EU’s bilateral relations focusing on its strategic partners in Asia. Key researchers and their associate researchers will explore the historical events, current issues and future implications of EU’s relationship with four Asian strategic partners. In a collaboration with National Centre for Research on Europe, this project will trace Asian strategic partners’ perceptions of the EU on a longitudinal base. The results of this project will not only appeal the EU’s global presence but also reveal the EU’s impact upon Asia and international society.
I am grateful for the support of this innovative multinational network, participating organisations in Asia-Pacific regions, and our collaborators and friends.
