ESAANZ Conference 2025 was organized by the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia on November 21, 2025.

Eun Jee Shin from Korea University participated in the ESSANZ Conference. Her presentation examined the European Union’s role in shaping and supporting Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) in Asia under increasing geopolitical strain, focusing on the cases of Vietnam and Indonesia. It analysed how the EU’s climate diplomacy, financing instruments, and strategic interests intersect with domestic political and economic constraints in both countries. Particular attention was given to the challenges posed by coal dependence, energy security concerns, and governance capacity in implementing just and inclusive energy transitions. The presentation also explored how broader geopolitical dynamics, including great-power competition and shifting global energy markets, affected the EU’s leverage and credibility as a transition partner. By comparing Vietnam and Indonesia, it highlighted divergent national pathways and shared structural obstacles. The analysis assessed whether JETPs can deliver meaningful de-carbonisation while addressing social justice concerns. Overall, the presentation reflected on the viability of JETPs as a model for international climate cooperation in an increasingly fragmented geopolitical context.
