The seventh session of the EU Society began with a presentation titled “MIND THE GAP: A Korean Perspective on European Everyday Life” by Higyong Jung.
Drawing from personal experience, Higyong reflected on the many cultural differences encountered while living in Europe as a Korean student. Higyong highlighted a wide range of cultural contrasts, including the casual European habit of bringing guests without warning, the sometimes intense tone of open debates, and differences in communication, such as the use of affectionate language that may be confusing across cultures. The presentation also touched on how small talk is more common in Europe, paying for water at restaurants, and how vacation norms (like two-week holidays) reflect different work-life priorities. Fashion and body inclusivity in Europe were also noted, as well as a higher visibility of LGBTQ+ communities and more relaxed dating norms. Everyday curiosities, such as how often Europeans drink water, etiquette around holding doors, and differing umbrella habits, were shared with humour and relatability.
During the discussion that followed, members compared these observations with their own experiences, particularly in Korea. One prominent topic was the 빨리 빨리 ("ppali ppali") culture—Korea’s fast-paced, efficiency-driven lifestyle—which contrasts with the often slower, more relaxed pace in many European countries. Members also discussed broader cultural differences in areas such as hospitality, personal space, social expectations, and gender roles.
