The sixth session of the EU Society began with a presentation titled “Impact of Brexit” by Isabella Heeley.

Her presentation explored both the intended and unintended consequences of the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, highlighting its effects on domestic politics, regional tensions, and the broader European project. Isabella opened with an overview of the “Global Britain” narrative that emerged post-referendum, before turning to specific issues such as tensions in Northern Ireland, renewed independence debates in Scotland, and disputes over fishing rights. She analysed how Brexit has strained internal unity within the UK while complicating relationships with EU member states. She also examined the role of political messaging in the Leave campaign, notably the slogan “Take Back Control” and the influence of figures like Nigel Farage. Isabella discussed how such messaging contributed to the rise of right-wing populism, with parties like Reform UK gaining momentum in the post-Brexit political landscape. A key theme of her talk was the gap between intention and impact, and she shared data from impact surveys illustrating public opinion shifts since the referendum. She critically reflected on the democratic validity of decisions made through heavily propagandised campaigns, stating that votes driven by misinformation challenge the integrity of democratic processes.

Afterwards members participated in a discussion, whether the UK should consider rejoining the EU, and whether the EU would even be open to that possibility. Members generally agreed that the UK would provide mass economic benefits for EU member states. The conversation also touched on the long-term implications of Brexit on EU cohesion, identity, and enlargement policy. Also members discussed what President Trump’s administration would mean for tariffs in the UK and obstacles in rejoining the EU. Moreover, the society discussed why right-wing ideology is becoming more rampant across Europe, alluding to the fact that amidst economic recession usually radical change may follow.
