l  Ambassador Hallgren introduced some basic facts of Sweden

      (small proportion/big territory, income equality, gender equality,

global corporate brands, no tradition of slavery,

exemplary cases of willingness of tax payment, long tradition of trade

       strong tradition of association, neutrality (WW2 and Cold War),

       strong democratic system, active society)

 

l  He presented Sweden’s international engagement.

--neutral states (not joining NATO)

        --Sweden’s strong support to the UN

        à It can be summed up as an image of “an honest broker and

a good global citizen.”

 

l  Sweden’s special role on the Korean peninsula

--diplomatic relations with SK (in 1959)

--diplomatic relations with DPRK (in 1973)

-- some reflections

Sweden’s support of North Korea’s denuclearization

(failed to entry in force of the 1996 CTBT (Comprehensive Nuclear-test-ban treaty).

(frustration regarding the 2017 TPNW (Treaty on the prohibition of Nuclear Weapons))

--SIPRI spotted the growth of military spending over the last 23 years.
